A detergent company based in Cabra was recently convicted of the discharge of material into the River Tolka in July last year, killing 5,000 fish in the section of the river which flows through Glasnevin and Drumcondra.
A €250 fine was imposed and the company has to pay legal costs and expenses amounting to €34,603, including €7,740 for mitigation measures.
The work of Inland Fisheries Ireland and Dublin City Council is to be commended in this case. Further such incidents can be reported on their hotline number 1890 – 34 74 24.
Notwithstanding the cooperation of the company in this instance, the headline fine is far too low and I will be raising this matter in the Dáil.
